Hexagonal Thinking

A Game Changer!

I first heard about this strategy when taking a course with Learning That Transfers - it was one of many fantastic teaching methods learned as I discovered the power of teaching through retrieval and connections.

In 2021-22 this became a favorite for both teacher and student - with 7th graders' eyes lighting up when they saw the plan for hexagonal thinking in the planner on the board.

It has it all - retrieval practice, connections, transfer of learning.

Please see below for a slideshow created to show other teachers the process as well as the handout, followed by a recent example of slides and artifacts from a 7th-grade introduction to poetry class in March 2022.

Notes

See below for lessons slides for the 7th grade introduction to poetry lesson.

We use affinity mapping and hexagonal thinking to retrieve former knowledge and then learn from each other as we review and remember about poetry.
